“A salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine the taste and increase the knowledge of the participants through conversation.” -Wikipedia
A Portland Revels Salon is just that. We gather together to learn about the history and tradition that our Christmas Revels show is based on. We usually present two informal educational and participatory Salons a year, one in the Spring and one in the Autumn. We sometimes are also able to present a special Salon featuring our Christmas Revels guest performer(s) just before our Christmas show to allow Revels fans to get a deeper understanding of the music and culture we are exploring. In 2013 the Autumn Salon featured Carol Silverman, Professor of Cultural Anthropology and Folklore at the University of Oregon, to lead an exploration into the culture, music, ritual and politics of Eastern Europe. The relaxed and delightful session featured a special emphasis on mumming traditions in Eastern Europe.
