The Christmas Revels 2010: In Celebration of the Winter Solstice

Our Artistic Team researches culture, music and winter traditions to bring our audiences a delightful new Christmas Revels script and show each December.

Our scriptwriters spend hundreds of hours exploring traditions and resources to create our special shows. A heady brew of Spanish spectacle, dance, and music is currently being mixed up for this December.

S
et in a storeroom of Spanish treasure deep within the walls of ancient Toledo, this year’s Christmas Revels promises a wealth of charms, from gorgeous music to richly textured costumes, all to appropriately pose the central question, "What is the greatest treasure of a culture?" Part of the answer lies in the historical and social complexities of medieval Spain, a time when Andalusian Muslims, Shepardic Jews and European Christians all inhabited the Iberian peninsula. In Andalusian Spain, learning, both scientific and philosophical, was greatly valued, so that Andalusian cities of Cordoba, Granada and Toledo were places of early advanced civilization and culture. It is from this intriguing time in history that Revels Stage Director Gray Eubank, and Music Director Robert Lockwood have pulled golden nuggets of poetry, song and dance to share with our audiences. "This year’s brand-new show is quite a wonderful challenge for us," explains Executive Director Debby Garman. "Revels has never before created a show based in Spain. Putting the completely new music and script together required a lot of research, and we fell in love with the beauty and diversity of Spanish culture. Andalusian Spain is especially colorful and fascinating, and we hope people enjoy the fruits of our labor." Returning to the Revels stage after a two-year hiatus is Burl Ross. Beloved by audiences for his tomfoolery in many Christmas Revels shows, Burl will don the mantle this year of Juan Bobo, simple and self-serving squire to pompous knight, Don Fulano. Special guests will include Julia and Tarik Banzi of the Al-Andalus ensemble and Flamenco dancer Laura Onizuka.
